Remittances from Egyptian Workers Abroad Increase by 27.2% to Reach $33.9 Billion in 2026

CAIRO, Egypt / RankWire.AI / – Egypt’s foreign currency inflows received a significant boost from remittances sent by Egyptians working overseas, which surged 27.2% during the first eight months of 2026 to a historic $33.9 billion. The Central Bank of Egypt announced these figures on Tuesday, October 13. During the same period in 2025, inflows were $26.6 billion, making the year-on-year increase approximately $7.3 billion. Covering January through August, the data confirms that expatriates’ transfers continued to grow throughout 2026, contributing further to Egypt’s foreign currency reserves.

Remittance receipts for August alone rose 21.7% compared to the previous year, reaching about $4.2 billion. In August 2025, inflows were roughly $3.5 billion. The monthly total was approximately $300 million less than July 2026, when transfers hit $4.5 billion. Nevertheless, August’s remittances added around $4.2 billion to the cumulative total. For the first seven months of 2026, remittances amounted to $29.7 billion, so the August figure lifted the total by 14.1%.

This upward trend has persisted for over two years, driven by the central bank’s reforms in March 2024 that introduced a more flexible exchange-rate regime and tightened monetary policy. Official channels have seen steady growth in transfer volumes since then. The government has also encouraged Egyptians abroad to utilize formal banking services rather than the parallel market, while expanding the financial options available to overseas Egyptians.

Remittances Bolster Egypt’s External Financial Position

Remittances are among Egypt’s primary sources of foreign currency, supporting liquidity within the banking system and alleviating pressure on the country’s external accounts. In the fiscal year 2025/2026, which concluded in June, remittances increased by 29.6% to $47.3 billion from $36.5 billion the previous year. The growth was partly offset by recovering tourism revenues and Suez Canal receipts, which helped limit the expansion of Egypt’s current account deficit during this period.

The strong remittance inflows have coincided with an increase in Egypt’s foreign reserves. According to central bank data, net international reserves reached a record $57.2 billion at the end of August 2026. These transfers also play a crucial role in Egypt’s economic reform program with the International Monetary Fund, which is scheduled to conclude in December. Increased inflows provide policymakers with additional foreign currency to manage import needs and external commitments effectively.

IMF Forecasts Accelerated Growth for Egypt in 2026

The IMF’s latest World Economic Outlook projects Egypt’s economy will expand by 5.1% in 2026, a rise from 4.4% in 2025. The organization anticipates a slowdown to 4.7% growth in 2027. It also expects the current account deficit to widen from 4.2% of gross domestic product in 2025 to 4.4% in 2026, reaching 4.9% of GDP in 2027.

Remittances totaled a record $41.5 billion in 2025, reflecting a 40.5% increase from the previous year. By the end of August 2026, inflows had already reached approximately 82% of that total with $33.9 billion. The central bank’s upcoming monthly data will reveal whether this momentum continues into the final four months. Authorities continue to promote official transfer channels for Egyptians abroad, emphasizing remittances as a vital component of Egypt’s foreign currency earnings alongside tourism and Suez Canal revenue.
