The escalating public health emergency in Central Africa is progressing faster than ever before, according to assessments shared by international health authorities on Friday. The World Health Organization has confirmed that, without swift measures to contain community spread and address regional supply chain issues, the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Ebola outbreak will break all previous death toll records. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus highlighted that the current epidemic trajectory risks surpassing the devastating 2014–2016 West African outbreak, which resulted in over 11,000 fatalities.
The ongoing Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has resulted in 1,916 fatalities and 4,209 confirmed infections, according to official reports through August 7. This marks an increase of 29 deaths compared to the previous update, which reported 1,887. Medical authorities also noted that 595 patients are currently hospitalized in isolation, while 828 individuals have recovered from the Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak.
Amidst a rising regional concern over waterborne illnesses, health officials in Chad have confirmed that an acute epidemic has resulted in 13 deaths since official public declarations were issued late last month. The latest surveillance data from the Ministry of Public Health of Chad indicate that the cholera outbreak in the country has claimed 13 lives, with the total number of confirmed and suspected cases reaching 239 nationwide. The case fatality rate stands at 5.4 percent, markedly higher than the thresholds typically regarded as acceptable in emergency health responses.
Obesity was associated with 9,509 fatalities in Belgium during 2022, accounting for 8.2 percent of the country’s total mortality, according to recent data from the Belgian public health institute Sciensano. This marks the first time that public health researchers in Belgium have systematically quantified mortality directly caused by a high body mass index (BMI). The report indicates that weight-related health issues led to more than one death every hour nationwide. Additionally, the analysis shows that high BMI contributed to over 150,000 years of life lost across various demographic groups within a single year.
EU health groups seek binding heat protection as Europe strengthens climate resilience planning. According to HEAL, national Heat Health Action Plans must include ambitious, quantifiable objectives aimed at safeguarding populations from climate-induced hazards, particularly extreme heat. The organization stresses that these plans should prioritize vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic conditions. Additionally, HEAL underscores the importance of addressing those facing social and economic disadvantages. The group has called on the EU to allocate funds towards health and climate resilience initiatives within the framework of the 2028 to 2034 long-term budget. The Standing Committee of European Doctors, or CPME, has also issued a plea for immediate action regarding heat-health preparedness across the continent. It urges authorities at EU, national, and local levels to develop, implement, and regularly update comprehensive response plans. CPME highlights that extreme heat can exacerbate cardiovascular and respiratory illnesses, leading to increased premature deaths among vulnerable populations. Furthermore, the organization has separately advocated for binding EU-wide targets on climate resilience and health, including specific objectives for national adaptation strategies. Prevention and Readiness Dominate Heat-Health Planning Updated guidance from WHO/Europe on Heat-Health Action Plans was released on June 11, 2026, emphasizing the urgency of addressing extreme heat as a significant public health threat. The framework covers eight critical areas: governance, warning systems, vulnerable groups, communication, health system resilience, exposure reduction, surveillance, and evaluation. It provides a structured approach
Moderna has commenced a Phase 1 clinical study of an experimental vaccine targeting Bundibugyo ebolavirus in Canada. The first participant received the mRNA-1469 vaccine on August 3 at a facility in Truro, Nova Scotia. This development occurs as the virus continues to spread across multiple provinces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The World Health Organization has designated the situation as a public health emergency of international concern.
Michigan confirms two deaths as officials investigate a major cyclospora outbreak. Both individuals fell ill prior to the voluntary iceberg lettuce recall announced on July 17. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the Michigan deaths on August 3, describing them as deaths related to cyclosporiasis involving persons with underlying health issues. The total cases reported by Michigan encompass all incidents documented during the investigation and are subject to change. Federal surveillance data typically include laboratory-confirmed cases and may differ from state figures, which also account for probable illnesses. In addition, federal authorities are probing a nine-state outbreak of Cyclospora linked to iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico. As of July 24, there have been reports from nine states of 1,947 infected individuals, many of whom also reported exposure to Taco Bell. At least 98 patients required hospitalization according to federal data. The onset of illness ranged from June 22 to July 20. The CDC later acknowledged Michigan’s two deaths, which had not been reflected in the detailed federal totals as of July 24. Recall of iceberg lettuce from Mexico’s central region All iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico by Taylor Farms de Mexico has been removed from the U.S. market. The recall covered various food-service products, as well as Marketside iceberg salad and shredded lettuce sold at selected Walmart stores. The affected products carried use-by dates ranging from July 18 to August 3. Taylor Fresh Foods distributed the impacted lettuce to 27 states between
The Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has expanded to become the largest on record for the country.
