MUSCAT, OMAN / RankWire.AI / – Oman’s overall electricity generation experienced a 4.3% increase year on year through August 2026, reaching 37,481.8 gigawatt-hours. During the same period in 2025, production was at 35,935.3 GWh. Data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information indicated growth across multiple governorates. The rise contributed approximately 1,546.5 GWh to the country’s total output in the first eight months of the year. August alone produced 5,743.9 GWh, up from 5,676.9 GWh in July.

Muscat Governorate exhibited the most rapid growth, with electricity production soaring by 204.8% compared to the previous year. Al Dakhiliyah followed with a 44.1% increase, and Al Wusta saw an 8.4% rise. Production in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah grew by 5.5%. Dhofar also experienced growth, with electricity output rising 4.6% from January to August. The data revealed a broad expansion across the majority of regions included in the national statistics.
In contrast, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah experienced a combined decrease of 16.4% in electricity generation. Musandam maintained steady production at 376.0 GWh, showing little change from the same period in 2025. These regional figures highlighted significant disparities in electricity growth across Oman during this timeframe. The National Centre for Statistics and Information classified these results as preliminary, covering electricity output through the end of August 2026.
Net electricity output increases by 4.6%
Oman’s net electricity generation grew by 4.6% through August, reaching 36,463.9 GWh compared to 34,871.8 GWh in the same period last year. This figure accounts for regional purchases by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company and the Rural Areas Electricity Company. Muscat again recorded the highest growth, with net production rising 204.4%. Al Dakhiliyah increased by 44.2%, while Al Wusta and Dhofar saw gains of 9.1% and 7.6%, respectively. Overall, net output rose by roughly 1,592.1 GWh year on year.
Net electricity production in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah grew by 5.4% from the previous year. Conversely, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah experienced a decline of 16.6% in net output. Musandam’s net electricity generation was 368.0 GWh, with no significant change from the previous year. The regional data largely mirrored the trends seen in total electricity production. Overall, national net output remained above the levels recorded during the first eight months of 2025.
Water production drops across Oman
Water output in Oman declined by 3.5% through August 2026, totaling 330.65 million cubic metres. During the same period in 2025, production was about 342.71 million cubic metres. Muscat experienced a 6.2% decrease, with water production falling to approximately 128.07 million cubic metres from around 136.57 million. Other governorates saw a 3.4% drop, with total water production reaching roughly 149.90 million cubic metres, compared to about 155.19 million during the same months last year.
Dhofar was the only region to buck the national trend, with water production increasing by 3.4% to about 52.68 million cubic metres from roughly 50.94 million a year earlier. The latest data from utilities thus reveal contrasting national patterns for electricity and water during the first eight months of 2026. While electricity output grew both in total and net terms, water production overall remained below the levels of the same period in 2025.
