NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – Amid a positive trading environment, U.S. equities experienced widespread advances on Monday, led by technology shares and a significant decline in oil prices. The Dow Jones Industrial Average increased by 693.38 points, or 1.32%, closing at an all-time high of 53,178.41. The S&P 500 moved up 1.48% to finish at 7,600.50, just shy of its record peak. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq Composite surged 2.13% to 25,913.90, marking the top performer among major indexes. The trading session commenced August with broad gains across large-cap and small-cap stocks alike.

U.S. stocks climbed as Big Tech gains and falling oil prices lifted market sentiment.

Technology and communication services stocks contributed significantly to the market’s upward movement. Meta Platforms and Alphabet boosted the S&P 500’s communication services sector by 4.3%, making it the strongest performer among 11 sectors. Amazon saw its shares rise 4.6%, surpassing a market value of $3 trillion for the first time following quarterly results. Additionally, an exchange traded fund tracking seven top technology firms increased nearly 4%, indicating strong investor interest in leading growth stocks.

The decline in crude oil prices also played a part in supporting the market. Brent crude settled down 4.7% at $83.77 per barrel after President Donald Trump announced that the United States would delay new strikes against Iran. Trump also mentioned that negotiations would focus on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, though Iran contested that no negotiations had been scheduled. The drop in oil prices helped ease immediate inflationary pressures and pushed Treasury yields lower during the trading day. Energy stocks fell 1.2%, making the sector the weakest on the day.

Drop in Oil Prices Eases Market Strain

The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note declined to around 4.68%, down from late Friday levels. This decrease in yields lessened borrowing costs for growth-oriented companies, whose valuations are often highly sensitive to interest rate fluctuations. Attention remained on the Federal Reserve amid recent inflation worries and rising energy prices. New York Federal Reserve President John Williams indicated that inflationary pressures should gradually subside. As bond prices rose and yields fell, investors awaited further labor market data to gauge the economy’s trajectory.

The rally extended beyond technology giants, with the Russell 2000 index of smaller firms climbing 1.7% to 2,981.91. On the New York Stock Exchange, advancing stocks outnumbered decliners by 2.62 to 1, while on the Nasdaq, the ratio was 3.01 to 1. Trading volume reached 19.36 billion shares, surpassing the 20-day average of 17.66 billion. The S&P 500 recorded 15 new 52-week highs and one new low during the session.

Strong Earnings Reports Support Market Uptrend

Earnings reports provided additional backing for the upward movement. Of the 304 S&P 500 companies that had reported through Friday, quarterly profits grew by 29.3%. According to market data provider LSEG, approximately 85.2% of these firms beat analyst forecasts. SpaceX saw its stock rise 5.6% ahead of its first quarterly report as a public entity. Conversely, Marriott International declined by 7% after issuing a profit forecast for the third quarter that fell short of expectations.

The Dow’s record closing mark capped a broad-based rally to start August, following a challenging July for several market sectors. Technology stocks had faced headwinds related to concerns over artificial intelligence investments, interest rate hikes, and tensions involving the U.S. and Iran. The gains on Monday pushed the S&P 500 to within 0.1% of its all-time high and extended the Nasdaq’s upward momentum. For 2026, the Dow has increased by 10.6%, the S&P 500 by 11%, and the Nasdaq by 11.5%.
