SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA / MENA Newswire / — Samsung Electronics became the largest supplier in the global automotive memory chip market in 2025, overtaking Micron Technology for the first time, according to data from S&P Global Mobility. The South Korean chipmaker raised its market share to 40 percent from 35 percent in 2024, while Micron Technology fell to 36 percent from 40 percent over the same period.

The ranking marks a shift in a segment increasingly tied to advanced driver assistance systems, in vehicle infotainment, connected car functions and software defined vehicle platforms. Automotive memory is used to store, process and move data across vehicle systems, including digital cockpits, driver assistance modules, navigation systems and vehicle control units that require reliable performance over long product cycles.

Samsung Electronics also ranked first in key automotive memory product categories, with a 44 percent share of automotive DRAM and a 33 percent share of automotive NAND flash, according to the reported S&P Global Mobility figures. Non volatile memory was excluded from the market tally. In 2019, Samsung held a 21 percent share of the automotive memory market, compared with Micron’s 45 percent.

    Automotive memory demand rises

Automotive semiconductor demand has become more dependent on memory as vehicles add higher levels of electronics and computing capacity. S&P Global Mobility has said memory integrated circuits are among the fastest growing automotive semiconductor categories, with demand linked to advanced driver assistance systems, electric vehicles, digital cockpits and centralized vehicle computing. The same research group has identified memory supply concentration as a key issue for automakers and suppliers.

Samsung’s automotive memory lineup includes low power DRAM, Universal Flash Storage, automotive solid state drives and graphics DRAM. The company entered the automotive semiconductor market in 2015 with low power memory products and later expanded into higher capacity storage and graphics memory for vehicle applications. Reported customer links include Qualcomm, Robert Bosch GmbH, Denso and Tesla, reflecting the role of component suppliers and vehicle makers in automotive chip supply chains.

Samsung Electronics qualified its automotive LPDDR4X memory for use with Qualcomm Technologies’ Snapdragon Digital Chassis in 2024. The product was designated for premium in vehicle infotainment and advanced driver assistance systems. Samsung has also outlined automotive memory products that meet AEC Q100 reliability requirements, a standard used for stress testing packaged integrated circuits in automotive environments.

China and product categories shape market

The company’s market position was supported by growth in China as well as existing automotive markets including Europe, South Korea and Japan, according to the reported market data. China has become a major center for electric vehicle production and vehicle electronics demand. S&P Global Mobility has separately said China is expected to account for 43 percent of global automotive semiconductor consumption by 2030.

The automotive memory market remains concentrated among a small group of suppliers, including Samsung Electronics, Micron Technology and SK Hynix. S&P Global Mobility has said roughly 90 percent of global automotive DRAM production is controlled by that group. The concentration places memory suppliers at the center of vehicle electronics supply, especially for platforms that rely on DRAM and NAND products used in infotainment, driver assistance and connected vehicle functions.
