Gold Maintains Above $4,400 Ahead of U.S. Inflation Data Release

UNITED ARAB EMIRATES / RankWire.AI / – In the broader commodities market, gold prices showed upward momentum on Thursday, buoyed by a softer U.S. dollar ahead of key inflation reports from the United States. The precious metal’s spot price increased by 0.3% to reach $4,414.28 an ounce by 0419 GMT. Meanwhile, U.S. gold futures for December delivery dipped slightly by 0.1%, settling at $4,457.20. The early gains helped keep spot gold above the $4,400 level following a sharp reversal seen during Wednesday’s trading session. After initially declining, gold prices closed more than 1% higher during that day.

Gold stays above $4,400 before US inflation releases
Gold prices hold above $4,400 as U.S. inflation data and interest rates stay in focus.

The U.S. dollar remained relatively subdued in early trading, supporting the dollar-denominated precious metals. A weaker dollar tends to reduce gold’s cost for buyers holding other currencies. At the same time, the benchmark U.S. 10-year Treasury yield stayed elevated around 4.84%. Since gold does not generate interest, fluctuations in bond yields are influential for the precious metals markets. Brent crude oil also maintained a position above $100 a barrel, following the crossing of that threshold in the previous session.

Market participants are closely watching two major U.S. inflation reports, with producer price index data scheduled for 1230 GMT on Thursday and consumer inflation figures expected on Friday. The Federal Reserve will hold its policy meetings on September 15 and 16, where inflation remains a critical factor in interest rate decisions. According to CME Group’s FedWatch Tool, markets currently assign roughly a 60% chance of a U.S. rate hike this month. The federal funds target range is currently set at 3.50% to 3.75%.

Focus on Inflation Data as Gold Stays Above $4,400

Wednesday’s trading session saw a notable shift from early price movements. Spot gold had declined marginally by 0.1% to $4,349.44 an ounce at 0040 GMT. However, by 1744 GMT, prices had rebounded 1.4% to $4,414.30. U.S. gold futures for December delivery gained 0.5%, closing at $4,458.80, ending a three-day decline for the metal. The early Thursday spot price remained near the levels recorded late on Wednesday as Asian markets continued trading.

On Thursday, other precious metals exhibited mixed performance. Silver in the spot market rose 0.3% to $67.50 an ounce, while platinum slipped 0.4% to $1,888.05. Palladium increased 0.2% to $1,356.20. These movements followed stronger gains in the previous session, where silver jumped 3.3% to $67.91, platinum advanced 5.1% to $1,906.20, and palladium gained 1.2% to $1,365.50. Overall, precious metals continue to be sensitive to currency fluctuations, bond yields, and interest-rate expectations.

Market Mixed as Oil and Bonds Remain Elevated

The gold market’s performance was also influenced by persistent concerns over geopolitical tensions and rising oil prices, especially around the Persian Gulf. Brent crude stayed above $100 per barrel on Thursday. Tensions escalated after Iran claimed responsibility for attacking 10 ships near the Strait of Hormuz following the United States’ sinking of five Iranian oil tankers. These incidents mark an escalation in regional disruptions affecting maritime shipping. Oil prices and global bond yields remained high as markets kept a close eye on inflation trends across major economies.

As of Thursday, spot gold was trading about 1.5% above its early Wednesday level of $4,349.44. December futures also stayed above the $4,393.30 mark seen earlier in the week. The current rate range set by the Federal Reserve and the latest inflation data continue to serve as key reference points for global precious metals trading. Gold opened Thursday trading above $4,400, with silver remaining above $67 an ounce. Most of Wednesday’s gains appear to hold, as investors await the upcoming U.S. producer and consumer inflation reports.
